Mecum will sell more than 600 collector cars during the Monterey Week 2017 auctions but the 26 cars with pre-sale estimates exceeding a million dollars attraction the most attention. Mecum had significant results with nearly new supercars at recent auctions and several will be on offer at Monterey 2017. The top result is likely from a white 2015 Ferrari LaFerrari with only 209 miles on the clock while the red 2014 Ferrari LaFerrari is with 566 miles hardly run-in. Other hardly used supercars on offer include a 2003 Ferrari Enzo (151 miles), a 2017 Ferrari F12tdf (84 miles) and a 2004 Porsche Carrera GT (25 miles!). More traditional classic cars include an ex-Team Cunningham 1958 Lister-Jaguar Knobbly, a 1965 Shelby 289 Cobra Roadster and a 1965 Ferrari 275 GTB Long Nose.

“Call for Estimate” Cars at Mecum Monterey 2017

Three of the main attraction cars on offer at Mecum Monterey 2017 are “Call for Estimate” lots. However, none of these are likely to be the top results at the auction.

1958 Lister-Jaguar “Knobbly”

The 1958 Lister-Jaguar “Knobbly”, chassis BHL102, is the more interesting car. This ex-Briggs Cunningham Team Lister Knobbly Jaguar was the second of just nine original Knobbly-Jaguars produced (ten continuation cars were made in 2014). The car on offer was raced in period by amongst others Stirling Moss, Briggs Cunningham, John Fitch, Ed Crawford, Walt Hansgen, Phil Forno, Ed Hugus and Chuck Daigh. This car was particularly successful in the USA in period and continued to participate in historic races.

The original 1958 Lister-Jaguar “Knobbly” prototype sold for just under $2 million at the RM Monterey 2013 auction.

1989 Porsche 962

The 1989 Porsche 962, chassis 108C-2, won the 1989 Daytona 24 Hour race as a Miller / BF Goodrich Busby Racing team car driven by John Andretti, Derek Bell and Bob Wollek. The car also won the 1989 Palm Beach Grand Prix and was the 1989 Porsche Cup USA winner.

This 1989 Porsche 962 received a highest bid of $2.3 million at the Mecum 2016 Kissimmee auction – just shy of the $2,500,000 – $3,000,000 estimate given at that auction.

Top Nearly New Cars at Mecum Monterey 2017

At recent Monterey auctions, Mecum often succeeded in obtaining stunning results on nearly new supercars. Mecum Monterey 2017 may provide more of the same, as several low-mileage supercars will be on offer:

Mecum’s top result at Monterey 2017 is likely to come from a 2015 Ferrari LaFerrari, estimate $4,500,000 – $4,700,000.

At Monterey 2016, Mecum stunned the auction world by selling a 2014 Ferrari LaFerrari for $4,700,000 (hammer price) – nearly $1.5 million more than Bonhams achieved for a similar car the day before. These two cars remain the only second-hand LaFerraris sold at auction – two further cars failed to reach reserve margins and RM Sotheby’s sold the new 500th LaFerrari for $7 million in a charity auction.

Four LaFerraris will be on offer at the various Monterey 2017 auctions – conveniently available in four different colors too. The white 2015 Ferrari LaFerrari at Mecum is clearly the pick of the bunch. It is one of only two delivered to the US with this white over red color scheme but more significantly, the car has only been driven for 209 miles.

The 2014 Ferrari LaFerrari, “call for estimate”, is a more conventional red over black and has covered only 566 miles.

Gooding is offering a hardly-used yellow 2015 Ferrari LaFerrari with 200 miles while the black 2015 Ferrari LaFerrari at RM Sotheby’s is a relatively high-mileage car with nearly 4,000 miles on the clock. Both cars are offered with estimates of around $3.3 to $3.9 million.

2015 Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse

The 2015 Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse is one of only 150 built and was one of the last delivered to the USA. The car is finished in a stunning black with orange accents. No mileage was catalogued so hopefully the owner actually used the car.

A more “standard” 2008 Bugatti Veyron 16.4 will be available for around a third of the price and expected to achieve less than the original $1.8 million sticker price while prewar Type 57 Bugattis will be on offer at Gooding and RM Sotheby’s.

2010 Koenigsegg CCXR Trevita

The 2010 Koenigsegg CCXR Trevita is another super rare supercar – only two examples were ever built with the one offer the only one completed in US specification. The car was part of the Ash Crest Collection and lists boxing champion Floyd Mayweather as previous owner. The car has clocked only 1,947 miles.

A few others to watch at Mecum Monterey 2017:

  • 2016 Aston Martin Vulcan – the 11th of 24 produced. This track-only car has covered less than 100 miles since new.
  • 2003 Ferrari Enzo – basically new with only 151 miles on the clock.
  • 2017 Ferrari F12tdf – hardly used with only 84 miles on the clock.
  • 2004 Porsche Carrera GT – a silver metallic over terracotta car with only 25 miles on the clock may give Mecum another million-dollar result for this model. A 2005 Porsche Carrera GT with 2,456 miles is likely to achieve $400,000 less.
  • 1971 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona – one of 7 Daytona Berlinettas on offer at the Monterey 2017 auctions but the estimate well above a million dollar reflects its racing history including 8th overall at the 4 Hours of Le Mans in 1972.
