Bonhams announced that it has been selected by the estate of Carroll Shelby to offer for sale cars from the personal collection of the late racer and designer. Two dozen automobiles owned by the automotive legend will be auctioned with no reserve at the East Coast sale in June 2018. In addition to Shelby cars, the sale will also include a 1935 Chrysler Airflow sedan that Carroll Shelby bought from Steve McQueen.

Bonhams Greenwich Sale 2018

The Bonhams classic car auction during the Greenwich Concours d’Elegance will take place in Greenwich, Connecticut on 3 June 2018. This annual sale is one of very few top classic car auctions held on the northeast coast of the USA.

The Bonhams Greenwich sale is held just to the north of New York City and had a high 92% sell-through rate in 2017.

The selection of 24 cars from the estate of Carroll Shelby on offer at the Bonhams Greenwich 2018 sale represents Shelby’s association with both Ford and Mopar over the decades, as well as his personal interests. Some of the many highlights include a 1969 Shelby GT 500 that he acquired from Academy Award nominated actor and fellow car enthusiast Jackie Cooper Jr., chassis 0001 of Carroll’s own 1999 Shelby 1 Series, and a 2011 Shelby Cobra CSX 8027 that was his personal example of his CSX 8000-series of modern Cobras.

Additional highlights include a 1935 Chrysler Airflow Sedan that is understood to have been acquired from Steve McQueen, and the 1982 Dodge Shelby Charger Prototype, which is the first collaboration between Shelby and Dodge – a famous relationship that would lead to the Viper.

Says Eric Minoff, Bonhams Head of Sale for Greenwich, “We’re honored to have been chosen to represent the legendary cars of the legendary man.” Adds Michael Caimano, Bonhams Motoring Specialist, “Carroll Shelby is synonymous with American racing and performance vehicles and his contribution to the motoring world is priceless. What a privilege it is to represent many of his personal cars.”

The Most-Expensive Shelby Ever

Unfortunately, the sale does not include the 1962 Shelby 260 Cobra, chassis CSX2000. This very first Cobra was sold at RM Sotheby’s Monterey 2016 for $13,750,000 as not only the most-expensive Shelby ever but also the most-expensive American built car ever. It is one of only three American cars to ever have achieved over $10 million at public auction.
