Three modern Bugattis – an EB110 SS, Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse, and Chiron – are on offer at the RM Sotheby’s Paris Rétromobile 2019 classic car auction.
RM Sotheby’s announced three modern Bugattis for the Paris Rétromobile classic car auctions in January 2019. The 1994 Bugatti EB110 SS, estimate €1.300.000 – €1.800.000 ($1,500,000 – $2,000,000) is one of only 38 produced. The 2014 Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse, estimate €1.575.000 – €1.800.000 ($1,780,000 – $2,000,000) is one of 92 while 500 of the 2017 Chiron, estimate €2.360.000 – €2.750.000 ($2,700,000 – $3,100,000), will be produced. Modern Bugattis often struggled at auctions in 2018.
RM Sotheby’s Paris Rétromobile Week Auction 2019
RM Sotheby’s scheduled its sixth annual Paris sale during Rétromobile week for 6 February 2019 at Place Vauban in Paris, France.
In 2019, RM Sotheby’s earned more than €32.4 million with a sell-through rate of 79%.
In 2018, RM Sotheby’s earned €23,745,335 with a fairly strong 83% sell-through rate. In 2017, RM Sotheby’s achieved a gross sale total of €27,576,400 ($29,451,595) with a sell-through rate of 78%. In 2016, RM Sotheby’s grossed €19 million with a sell-through rate of 79%.
Modern Bugattis at RM Sotheby’s Paris 2019
Three headline Bugatti entries underline a strong supercar and high-performance theme for RM Sotheby’s 2019 French sale. Bidding on modern Bugattis often failed to clear reserve margins at auctions in 2018 and the Paris auction may provide a good indication of market sentiment on these models.
1994 Bugatti EB110 SS
The 1994 Bugatti EB110 SS, estimate €1.300.000 – €1.800.000 ($1,500,000 – $2,000,000) is the ultimate iteration of the EB110, the best of French and Italian engineering. The ‘Super Sport’ – lighter and more powerful than the standard version – was introduced in 1992, one year after the base model was first unleashed on public roads.
Just 38 sports-enhanced models were ever made, while this example must be one of the lowest-mileage examples with a mere 907 km from new. Powered by a 3.5-liter quad-turbocharged V12 engine rated at 592bhp, official figures for the EB110 SS recorded a top speed of 216 mph (348 km/h) and a 0-62mph (0-100km/h) time of 3.2 seconds.
Bugattis from the 1990s are generally unloved – only three have sold for more than a million dollar at auction with results just above a million dollar more common than the $1.4 million RM Sotheby’s achieved for a EB110 SS Prototype at Paris 2018 making the estimate for the car on offer in 2019 look rather optimistic.
2014 Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse
A 2014 Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse, estimate €1.575.000 – €1.800.000 ($1,780,000 – $2,000,000) is also offered at the RM Sotheby’s Paris 2019 sale.
Finished in the unique two-tone Porsche Carrera White and Blue, the 8.0-liter quad-turbocharged V16-powered Veyron on offer is one of 92 Grand Sport Vitesse models built and has covered just 2,750 km from new.
Although RM Sotheby’s sold a 2015 Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse for $2,420,00 at Monaco 2018, Veyrons generally struggled to find buyers in 2018, including during Monterey Week when six Veyrons failed to sell.
2017 Bugatti Chiron
The trio of Bugatti supercars in Paris is completed by a 2017 Chiron, estimate €2.360.000 – €2.750.000 ($2,700,000 – $3,100,000) delivered new to Bugatti Dusseldorf, finished in two-tone Nocturne and Bugatti Light Blue over Beluga Black and Bugatti Light Blue, and having covered less than 1,800 km. The Chiron is also powered by an 8.0-liter quad-turbocharged V16 engine, allowing it to accelerate from 0-60mph (0-97 km/h) in just 2.4 seconds.
While standard Chiron models are still on sale today, production is limited to 500, making this almost-new Chiron an attractive alternative as it is ready to purchase at auction.
A world auction record was set when RM Sotheby’s sold a 2017 Bugatti Chiron for €3,323,750 ($4,088,212) as the top result at its Paris Rétromobile week 2018 sale. It was (and remains) only the second Chiron ever sold at auction.
