The 1961 Aston Martin DB4GT Zagato ‘2 VEV’ is the lead car for the Bonhams Goodwood Festival of Speed 2018 classic car auction.
Twelve cars, including four Aston Martins, are expected to sell for over a million dollar at the Bonhams Goodwood Festival of Speed 2018 sale. Bonhams expects that the 1961 Aston Martin DB4GT Zagato ‘2 VEV’ may set a new record for a British car offered at public auction in Britain while multi-million results are also expected from a more standard 1960 Aston Martin DB4 GT and an ex-Scuderia Ferrari 1932 Alfa-Romeo Tipo B Grand Prix Monoposto. The 1957 BMW 507 Roadster owned by John Surtees and a 1965 Aston Martin DB5 driven by James Bond in Goldeneye are also expected to sell at a premium.
Bonhams Goodwood Festival of Speed Sale 2018
The annual Bonhams Goodwood Festival of Speed sale is held on 13 July 2018 during arguably the most important motoring event in Britain. It takes place at Goodwood near Chichester in the south of England.
The Bonhams Goodwood Festival of Speed sale is usually the most important of the three Goodwood auctions Bonhams holds most years. The Goodwood Members sale is in mid-March while the Goodwood Revival sale in September is usually a great occasion for historic cars.
The Goodwood auction record, also the British auction record, was set in 2013 when $29,650,000 (£19.6 million) was paid for a 1954 Mercedes Benz W196R Formula 1 single-seater racing car. At the time, it doubled the highest price paid for a car at auction and it is currently still the third most-expensive car ever sold at public auction.

Top Aston Martins at Bonhams Goodwood Festival of Speed 2018
Aston Martin is the brand attracting the most attention at the Bonhams Goodwood Festival of Speed 2018 sale. Four are expected to sell for more than a million dollar each:
1961 Aston Martin DB4GT Zagato ‘2 VEV’
The 1961 Aston Martin DB4GT Zagato, chassis 0183/R, registration number 2 VEV, estimate: “Refer to department”, is the headline car for the Bonhams Goodwood Festival of Speed 2018 auction. It is one of only 19 cars produced and one of only four built to lightweight specification for racing purposes.
John Ogier’s Essex Racing Stable raced two DB4GT Zagatos that became known by their registration plate numbers 1 VEV and 2 VEV. Both cars participated in, and retired from, the 1961 Le Mans 24 Hours race. Famously, this DB4GT Zagato was also raced by Jim Clark at Goodwood and in 1962 was involved in an accident with a Ferrari 250 GTO.

1960 Aston Martin DB4 GT
A more “standard” 1960 Aston Martin DB4 GT will also be offered in the Bonhams Goodwood Festival of Speed 2018 sale and should confirm how much more expensive a Zagato version is.
This ex-Peter Thornton, Ian Dalglish DB4 GT was actively and successfully campaigned in period. It is offered with two engines: the original and a more modern engine used where allowed in races.
2011 Aston Martin One-77 Q-Series Coupe
The 2011 Aston Martin One-77 Q-Series Coupe is in an as new condition as could be expected from a single-owner car that has covered only 300 km since new. It is one of only 77 built and the sixth of only seven Q-Series Special Editions.
1965 Aston Martin DB5 Sports Saloon
The 1965 Aston Martin DB5 Sports Saloon on offer at the Bonhams Goodwood Festival of Speed 2018 sale is a bit more special than most. This DB5 was driven by Pierce Brosnam playing James Bond in the 007 film Golden Eye.
A premium of around half a million dollar over a standard DB5 is expected for this car to make it one of the most-expensive 007 memorabilia ever sold. However, the non-driving 2015 Aston Martin DB10 Spectre was sold by Christie’s in a charity auction in 2016 for almost $3.5 million.

1932 Alfa-Romeo Tipo B Grand Prix Monoposto
The most-expensive car that Bonhams released an estimate for at the Goodwood Festival of Speed sale is the 1932-4 Alfa-Romeo Tipo B Grand Prix Monoposto, estimate $6,000,000 – $6,600,000. The ex-Scuderia Ferrari, ex-Richard-Shuttleworth, 1935 Donington Grand Prix-winning car is also the only car with a Ferrari connection in this sale that is likely to achieve bids of over a million dollar.
Richard-Shuttleworth famously won the 1935 Donington Grand Prix – the first full-distance grand prix race in this 1932 Alfa-Romeo Tipo B Grand Prix Monoposto. An accident in the Alfa in South Africa ended Shuttleworth’s car racing career and he subsequently spent more effort on aviation.
1957 BMW 507 Roadster
The 1957 BMW 507 Roadster on offer at the Bonhams sale is one of only 252 built but what makes it really special is that John Surtees owned it from new until his death in 2017.
Surtees was bought the BMW by Count Domenico Augusta following Surtees winning the 500 cc Motorcycle World Championship in 1956. BMW tweaked the engine and fitted disc brakes, as Surtees wanted to go up mountains bit faster and down a bit slower.
The BMW is in immaculate condition and Bonhams clearly expect a model record.

Modern Supercars at Bonhams Goodwood Festival of Speed 2018
In addition to the Aston Martin One-77, the following modern supercars are also expected to deliver million-dollar results at the Bonhams Goodwood Festival of Speed 2018 auction:
- 2012 Bugatti Veyron Super Sport Coupe, estimate $2,700,000 – 3,000,000 – the last of the Veyron Super Sport cars built. A one-owner car with only 550 km on the clock.
- 2014 McLaren P1 Coupe, estimate $1,700,000 – 2,300,000 – a single-owner car with only 80 miles on the clock. P1 prices have been weaker this year with the last two sold only achieving just over $1.7 million.
- 2016 Pagani Huayra Coupe, estimate $1,700,000 – 2,100,000 – well-used in comparison with 7,650 miles on the clock, the Huayra is rare with only 100 produced and only 4 supplied to the UK.

Bentleys at Bonhams Goodwood Festival of Speed 2018
Several classic Bentleys will be on offer at the Bonhams Goodwood Festival of Speed 2018 sale with three expecting to sell for over a million dollar:
- The 1931 Bentley 4½-Litre Supercharged Tourer is the most-exiting Bentley on offer as it is considered one of the 50 Blower Bentleys built to homologate the Birkin team cars.
- The 1929 Bentley Speed Six ‘Le Mans Replica’ Tourer is one of only 121 Speed Sixes built on the SP2 short chassis. It originally had a HJ Mulliner saloon body before a Vanden Plas-stlye Le Mans Team Car body was fitted towards the end of the 20th century.
- The 1951 Bentley R-Type Continental Sports Saloon with coachwork by H.J. Mulliner was the 11th of 208 produced – the first production car is on offer at the Gooding Pebble Beach 2018 sale in August.
Several further classical Bentleys from the 1920s and 1930s will be on offer at the Bonhams Quail Lodge 2018 sale during the Monterey Week in August.
