2017 Gooding Scottsdale Classic Car Auction Preview

Two Ferrari 275 GTBs are the top cars at the 2017 Gooding & Company Scottsdale classic car auctions. The unique 1932 Packard Twin Six 906 Individual Custom Convertible Sedan is likely to be one of the star attractions. The 1965 Ferrari 500 Superfast should also sell for multiple millions. A 1925 Bugatti Type 35 Grand Prix leads the classic pre-war cars that will also include a 1932 Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 Series V Grand Sport Roadster, a rare 1936 Squire 1 ½ Litre Tourer and a 1928 Bentley 4 ½ Litre Open Sports Tourer.

1932 Packard Twin Six 906 Individual Custom Convertible Sedan

The 1932 Packard Twin Six 906 Individual Custom Convertible Sedan is the only car in the Gooding Scottsdale 2017 sale that enters the auction without a published estimate. Although the top Ferraris are likely to return higher results, this classic American certainly is the most spectacular car on offer in the sale.

The 1932 Packard Twin Six 906 Individual Custom Convertible Sedan is one of only two examples built with coachwork by Dietrich on the twin six chassis. The original owner was Al Jolson, one of Hollywood’s first superstars.

The Packard has a proud exhibition history: amongst others, it won Best in Class twice at the prestigious Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance – first in 1963 and then again in 2012.

Top Ferraris at Gooding Scottsdale 2017

Several expensive Ferraris will be on offer at the Gooding Scottsdale 2017 sale. The top results of the auction are likely to come from one of the Ferrari 275 GTBs.

1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 Long Nose Alloy

The pine green over orange 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 Long Nose Alloy, chassis 10563, estimate $3,000,000-$3,400,000, is likely to bring the highest price at the Gooding Scottsdale 2017 auction.

This 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 Long Nose Alloy with coachwork by Scaglietti has a well-documented history from new. It is presented in the correct factory colors and has covered only 42,400 miles.

1966 Ferrari 275 GTB Long Nose Alloy

The silver over black 1966 Ferrari 275 GTB Long Nose Alloy, chassis 08117, estimate $2,900,000-$3,200,000, is also in correct colors and nearly as desirable a car as the GTB/4.

This 1966 Ferrari 275 GTB Long Nose Alloy is one of only 80 produced with Scaglietti aluminum long-nose bodies. (Ferrari produced 453 cars of the 275 GTB series in total.)

1965 Ferrari 500 Superfast

The immodestly named 1965 Ferrari 500 Superfast, chassis 5989 SF, estimate $2,800,000-$3,200,000, is amongst the rarest of road-going Ferraris – only 36 were built. Pininfarina adapted the cars to owner’s personal specifications resulting in a final price around double that of a standard 275 GTB.

The 1965 Ferrari 500 Superfast on offer at Gooding Scottsdale 2017 was only the seventh of 28 built with left-hand drive. Two Ferrari 500 Superfast sold for $3 million in California in 2016.

2011 Ferrari 599 SA Aperta

The 2011 Ferrari 599 SA Aperta, estimate $1,200,000-$1,400,000 is the latest modern Ferrari model to sell usually at over a million dollar at auction. Only 80 were made. Two sold for over a million in 2016 – a significant premium over the more conventional Berlinettas.

Top Pre-War Cars at Gooding Scottsdale 2017

Several top 1920s and 1930s racing and sports cars will be on offer at the Gooding 20167 Scottsdale classic car auctions:

1925 Bugatti Type 35 Grand Prix

The 1925 Bugatti Type 35 Grand Prix, estimate $2,600,000 – $3,200,000, is considered one of the most original of these cars in existence. Remarkably, the car had only three owners since new.

Almost as remarkable is the car that will immediately follow the sale of the Type 35 – a 1928 Bugatti Type 52 Bebe. This half-size replica of the famous Bugatti Type 35 was sold as an electric car for children (of very wealthy families). Around 500 were produced with about 100 surviving. This 1928 Bugatti Type 52 Bebe has been in static display for decades and although offered at Gooding Scottsdale 2017 with no reserve, still comes with a whopping estimate of $65,000-$75,000.

1932 Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 Series V Grand Sport Roadster

The 1932 Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 Series V Grand Sport Roadster, estimate $2,250,000-$2,750,000, is a supercharged car with open coachwork by Figoni. The car’s ownership history is only known from 1934 onwards and it is speculated that Pierre Dreyfus may have been the original owner. At recent auctions, these expensive Alfa Romeos have often failed to sell although a 1931 Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 Supercharged Grand Sport Spider sold for just over $3 million at Bonhams Scottsdale 2014.

1936 Squire 1 ½ Litre Tourer

The 1936 Squire 1 ½ Litre Tourer, estimate $1,500,000-$2,000,000, is one of only seven cars Squire built and one of only two on the long chassis. It has open coachwork by Ranalah. It was raced by original owner Val Zethrin in 1936 in the RAC Rally and at Broolands. This rare Squire recently received a 4,100-hour restoration.

1928 Bentley 4 ½ Litre Open Sports Tourer

The 1928 Bentley 4 ½ Litre Open Sports Tourer, estimate $1,100,000-$1,400,000, retains its original engine, chassis and coachwork by Vandenplas. The Bentley has a well-documented history and full provenance from new. The car is presented in British racing green over dark brown hides. The 1928 Bentley 4 ½ Litre Open Sports Tourer completed at least two 1,000-mile rallies in recent years.

Porsches at Gooding Scottsdale 2017

Gooding traditionally had good success with Porsche cars at auctions. Prices for many Porsche cars have risen steeply in recent months with 911 models occasionally breaking the $1-million barrier that sellers have long hoped for.

A few of the 23 Porsches on offer at Gooding Scottsdale 2017 include:

The 1996 Porsche 993 GT2, estimate $1,300,000-$1,600,000, is one of only 57 road-going cars produced for homologation purposes. This 993 GT2 is largely original and has covered only 36,000 km since new. This particular car sold for $973,500 at Gooding Amelia Island 2015 but the staggering $2.5 million RM Sotheby’s achieved in London 2016 for a 1995 Porsche 911 GT2 probably have many owners exited.
The 1988 Porsche 959 Komfort, estimate $1,100,000-$1,300,000, is one of 242 Komfort models produced. It has covered a relatively low 22,000 km since new. Invoices for recent work totaled $235,000 confirming that not only the purchase price is high on these cars.
A 2005 Porsche Carrera GT, estimate $650,000-$750,000 and a garage-find 1958 Porsche 356 A Super Speedster, estimate $200,000-$275,000, will also be worth watching.

1961 Mercedes Benz 300 SL Roadster – a matching-numbers example in professionally restored condition.
1955 Mercedes Benz 300 SL Gullwing – offered for sale from the original owner with only 31,239 miles since new. An unrestored but very original car that may prove very popular.
1964 Aston Martin DB5 – one of only 220 left-hand drive cars produced. It has a vague early history but has covered only 1,000 miles in the past three decades.
1969 American Motors AMX/3 – a rare part of American automobile history in concours condition: it won Best in Class at Pebble Beach 2016.
1964 Shelby 289 Cobra – a late-production car with show-quality restoration.
