Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale 2017 Sale

Barrett-Jackson’s mammoth 46th Scottsdale collector car and automobilia sales were held over nine days from 14 to 22 February 2017 in Scottsdale, Arizona. Nearly 320,000 people attended the nine-day auction.

As usual, Barrett-Jackson offered all kinds of vehicles from fairly common cars to rare muscle cars and American racers. There are usually some jewels hidden in between and Barrett-Jackson again succeeded in surprising the collector car market with some stunning results – this year an Aston Martin DB5 sold at the highest price paid since 2014.

In 2017, Barrett-Jackson earned $102.4 million: nearly $100 million from the 1719 cars and $2.5 million for more than 1800 lots of automobilia. The sell-through rate was a very impressive 99.5%- In 2016, Barrett-Jackson grossed $105 million and offered 1,469 cars for sale.

Aston Martin prices have been increasing steadily at recent auctions. After three Aston Martin DB5s sold for over a million dollar in 2014, many more tested the market in 2015 and 2016. However, the first standard Aston Martin DB5 to achieve in excess of a million dollar was only at RM Sotheby’s Arizona sale 2017 when a 1965 Aston Martin DB5 sold for $1,045,000.

A few hours later and only a few miles down the road, Barrett-Jackson took $1,485,000 for a 1964 Aston Martin DB5 at its Scottsdale 2017 sale. This rare factory left-hand-drive example came from a prominent collection and is a matching numbers example in top condition. Expect to see many more DB5s at auctions in 2017.

Barrett-Jackson achieved a strong $1,320,000 for the 1960 Chevrolet Engineering Research Vehicle (CERV) 1. This car was developed between 1959 and 1960 by Zorka Arkus-Duntov as a mid-engine, open-wheel racing car.

Although never raced, the car served as an engineering test bed to develop and refine Chevrolet body, chassis and suspension systems.

Justin Bieber’s 2011 Ferrari 458A few further noteworthy results at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale 2017 auctions:

  • Justin Bieber’s 2011 Ferrari 458 Italia sold for $434,500 – a new world record for the model even if the price included concert tickets and a backstage pass (use not obligatory!)
  • Just missing out on the top-ten, a new model record was set when a 1965 Volkswagen Type II 21-Window Deluxe Bus sold for $302,500. This VW bus was professionally restored to an exceptionally high standard – the average Samba bus is not going to make a quarter million in forthcoming sales.
  • A new model record was also set when a 1956 Austin Princess sold for $159,000. This car belonged to John Lennon and failed to sell at the RM Sotheby’s London 2016 sale with a highest bid of £135,000 – $180,000 at the time.

Three noteworthy cars that failed to sell:

  • 2011 Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport – the highest $1.9 million bid was not enough to by Floyd Mayweather’s white Bugatti.
  • A 1970 Plymouth Hemi Cuda Convertible received an unsuccessful highest bid of $1.6 million.
  • A 1971 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Spider Conversion received a highest bid of $575,000 – the four unmolested berlinettas at other auction houses also failed to sell.

Barrett-Jackson generally follows a collector car auction schedule independent of the other major auction houses. Its next major auctions are Palm Beach in April, Northeast in Connecticut in June and Las Vegas in October.
