The highest bid on the night was $4.7 million for a 1956 Maserati 200 SI but failed to clear the reserve margin.

With the Maserati 200 SI failing to sell despite a highest bid of $4.7 million, it was up to a Ferrari to take the top slots at the Gooding 2015 Amelia Island auction.

1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4

The stunning light blue 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 achieved a good $3,300,000 price. This strikingly original Ferrari is a well-preserved garage find that has not been registered since 1982. The car has never been restored, shown at events or offered for public sale.

1961 Ferrari 250 GT Series II Cabriolet

The white 1961 Ferrari 250 GT Series II Cabriolet achieved the second highest result at the Gooding auction when it sold for $2,090,000. Only 200 of the Series II Cabriolets with coachwork by Pinin Farina were built. The Ferrari is in concourse restored condition and has been shown at numerous classic car events in recent years.

1991 Ferrari F40

A 1991 Ferrari F40 received a highest bid of $1.45 million but failed to clear the reserve margin. However, a successful sale at $1,662,500 was announced a few minutes later. Ferrari produced 1,315 F40s and despite the relative high numbers, F40s are highly sought after and frequently trade at prices around a million dollar. This low-mileage F40 – less than 2,500 miles covered since new – sold for over a million dollar more than the original price in 1991.

2011 Ferrari 599 SA Aperta

A light blue 2011 Ferrari 599 SA Aperta sold for $1,155,000. This stunning light blue car is one of just 80 examples of the convertible with coachwork by Pininfarina built to celebrate the 80th anniversary of Pininfarina. All were sold before the car was publicly announced. However, having covered only 350 miles this car is practically still brand new.

Mercedes Benz 300 SLs at Gooding Amelia Island 2015

Gooding had two Mercedes Benz 300 SLs on offer at the 2015 Amelia Island sale:

A white, low-mileage 1957 Mercedes Benz 300 SL Roadster in outstanding restored condition sold for $1,237,500 – just below the pre-auction estimate.

A 1963 Mercedes Benz 300 SL Roadster attracted a highest bid of $1,275,000 but failed to clear the reserve margins (estimate $1.6-2 million). However, the price of $1,275,000 was later negotiated.

As at several other auctions this year, buyers seem unwilling to pay above $1.5 million for 300 SLs. These cars are simply too common and too few that special that they currently warrant such high asking prices.

Porsches at the Gooding Amelia Island 2014 Sale

Porsches traditionally do well at Amelia Island and Gooding had several very special Porsches on offer. The best result was $1,237,500 for a 1974 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.0 RST – the “Café Mexicano” car that was raced by amongst others Héctor Rebaque.

A 1996 Porsche 993 GT2 sold for $973,500 while a 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 RS Lightweight had a highest bid of $900,000. Similar Porsches in recent months have failed to clear reserve margins still higher than buyers are currently willing to go.

A few interesting lots and results from the Gooding Amelia Island 2015 classic car auction:

  • The highest bid on the day was $4.7 million for a rare 1956 Maserati 200 SI racing car. Sterling Moss, who was present at the auction, raced this car and although he wouldn’t comment on the price, he kept reminding everyone that it was a very good car to drive.
  • 1953 Fiat 8V Vignale Coupe

A 1953 Fiat 8V Coupe received much attention before the sale but the highest bid of $1.2 million (estimate of $1.6-2 million) confirmed that even a stunningly beautiful Fiat with body by Vignale couldn’t achieve Ferrari money.

  • A 1934 Duesenberg Model SJ Touring Berline received a highest bid of only $775,000 – well below the expected $950,000 to $1,400,000.
  • A 1932 Lincoln KB Custom Stationary Coupe sold for $836,000.

Gooding & Company’s next classic car auction will be at Pebble Beach on August 15 & 16, 2015.
